OBN Medication Technician Course

Description

The purpose of this course is to teach students how to safely administer and document prescribed and over-the-counter (OTC) medications to individuals receiving services from Ohio nursing homes and residential care facilities according to Ohio Administrative Code 4723-27. 

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the role and functions of a certified medication aide (CMA)
  • Describe the six rights of medication administration and their application to safe medication administration
  • Relate the function of administering medications to the promotion of resident’s rights
  • Administer medications accurately and safely
  • Complete accurate documentation
  • Explain and demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA laws and its relevance to medication administration
  • Maintain the dignity and privacy of residents
  • Successfully complete the written and clinical examinations provided by The CMA Training Program

Prerequisites

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Education: Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED) as described in section 5107.40 of the Ohio Revised Code
  • Criminal Background Check: Applicants must undergo a criminal background check as required by the Ohio Board of Nursing and in paragraph K of the Ohio Administrative Code 3701-17-07. 
  • Drug Screening: Applicants must complete a drug screening test prior to beginning a clinical experience rotation. A positive test for prohibited substances may disqualify the applicant from admission.
  • Successful completion of a basic skills test for reading, writing and mathematics. Applicants must complete preliminary assessments with a score of 80% or higher.

 

Prior to beginning any clinical experience, applicants must provide the following:

  • Students must undergo a baseline Tuberculosis (TB) screening using a two-step tuberculin skin test (TST) or an interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA), such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold or T-SPOT.TB test.
  • If the initial TST is positive, students must provide documentation of a follow-up chest X-ray and a healthcare provider’s evaluation to rule out active TB.
  • Ability to Meet Physical Demands: Students certify in writing that they must be able to stand for extended periods, lift patients or equipment as necessary, and perform duties that require physical stamina.
